Howdy! After eight months of toiling, translating, editing, and re-editing, I am proud to say that the cPanel Spanish translation team (which is composed of George Alpízar and myself) has completed the publication of the cPanel & WHM 11.28 documentation in Spanish!
There were a lot of documents! (Over 600 for WHM ALONE.) So we did what any person would do when trying to eat an elephant: do it one piece at a time. The translation project was divided into three parts: the cPanel User Guide, published in March 2011; the Installation Guide, published in May 2011; and then, finally, the WHM User Guide, published just this week (August 2011).
George and I split the translation between us, and revised and edited each other’s work (as any good technical writer and translator would do). Among all this, we had to take upon another task: establish our own Spanish cPanel terminology dictionary. While we did use a few English-Spanish online and print dictionaries, you’ll be surprised to know that there aren’t that many technical English-Spanish dictionaries. As a result, we pooled whatever resources we could find and established a spreadsheet with frequently used terms. During our research, we often encountered different translations for the same word, so we had to come to a consensus regarding which was the best term to use for that situation. Likewise, there were instances when we decided that maintaining the term in English would be better for our customers instead of using a more obscure translation. For instance, we agreed that keeping the word spam in English would be more appropriate for our translation, instead of using a more obscure Spanish term.
All in all, it has been a wonderful experience working with cPanel to help out our Spanish-speaking clients. We hope our translation will assist them in better understanding how to use our product. Our future translation projects include the cPanel & WHM 11.30 documentation , as well as the revision of the cPanel Spanish locale interface.
George and I would like to also offer a special ¡¡GRACIAS!! to Marlon Sánchez and the rest of the Spanish Tech Support team for their assistance in the technical revision of the Spanish text. Their input helped us adapt some of the language and terminology in the translated work to a more tech-savvy audience.
